Towards the end of the term of the last government every household living in the rural areas were each provided with one solar set comprising a panel, a battery, three solar torches a few other accessories. The then government was hoping that the project would make everyone in the outer islands happy and pro-government before or during the general and presidential elections. However, that did not work out as planned for reasons best known to the electors themselves. So the South Tarawa voters had a reason to complain why they were not provided with such solar sets.
The Minister for Public Works and Utilities who is also the Vice President, Hon. Kourabi Nenem, assured that more solar sets would be ordered from the same company in Taiwan that designed and manufactured the aforementioned supply of sets and these would be distributed out initially to houses or homes in South Tarawa that are not yet connected to the Public Utilities Board.
